SSF’s Training, Weapons, and Equipment Modernization Underway: Chief Adviser

Md. Al Masum Khan: Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, stated that the modernization of the Special Security Force (SSF) including its training, weapons, and equipment is currently in progress. Notably, some vehicles and equipment damaged on August 5 have already been restored to operational condition within a short period.

He made these remarks on Wednesday morning while speaking at the 39th founding anniversary ceremony of the Special Security Force (SSF).

Expressing gratitude for the invitation, the Chief Adviser noted that the SSF, though smaller in size compared to other forces, carries significant responsibility and operates under his direct leadership and supervision. The SSF is a disciplined and well-trained force that ensures the security of both the President and myself, he said.

Over the past ten months, the SSF has successfully fulfilled numerous important duties both at home and abroad. The Chief Adviser conveyed his satisfaction with the force’s professionalism and dedication and thanked all SSF members for their contributions.

Highlighting the SSF’s wide-ranging responsibilities, Professor Yunus said the force secures his residence, office, and movements, along with playing a vital role in ensuring the smooth execution of events across the country, including recent visits to Cox’s Bazar and the Rohingya camps, the Chattogram Port, and the convocation at Chattogram University. The SSF has also played a key role in ensuring the security of international dignitaries visiting Bangladesh, such as the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the President of Timor-Leste, and the UN Secretary-General.

The Chief Adviser acknowledged that global technological advancements and the ease of information exchange have transformed the nature of security threats, making it increasingly challenging to ensure full-proof protection. Despite these challenges, he emphasized the SSF’s consistent success in securing key functions. He added that the SSF has recently enhanced cyber security measures for the Jamuna system and will do the same for his office.

He said the SSF will continue to evolve with professional training, modern technology, and high morale. Plans are in place to replace the 12-year-old VHF radio communication system with the latest UHF system, which will significantly boost the SSF’s operational capacity. Furthermore, an advanced indoor flight firing range is near completion and expected to be operational from next month. He extended thanks to the Bangladesh Air Force for their support in allocating land and other facilities for the range.

The Chief Adviser also acknowledged that in ensuring security, certain restrictions may cause public inconvenience. I have directed the SSF to minimize public disruption as much as possible, he said. As an example, he mentioned lifting the previous restriction at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport that suspended flight operations for up to an hour during VIP movements, which had caused significant complications.

He emphasized that maintaining public engagement and balancing it with security responsibilities will allow the SSF to fulfill its mandate more effectively. He also stressed the importance of coordination with other law enforcement, intelligence, and armed forces. I expect the SSF to maintain strong communication and coordination with all supporting agencies, he said.

Expressing his deep gratitude to all military and law enforcement agencies for deputing capable officers to the SSF, he especially thanked the Bangladesh Army for providing various forms of training support.

He concluded by urging SSF members to uphold professionalism, discipline, honesty, accountability, and humanity rising above all political ideologies. With competent leadership and the dedication of every member, I am confident that the SSF will continue to progress. I wish health and wellbeing for all members and their families, he said.
