Chelsea secured the Club World Cup title by defeating European champions PSG. The tournament’s young star, Cole Palmer, who proved all doubters wrong, expressed immense joy after the victory.
In the final held at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Chelsea overwhelmed PSG with a 3-0 victory. The match’s hero was English midfielder Palmer, who scored two goals within eight minutes, turning the game decisively in Chelsea’s favor.
Despite the scorching heat and temperatures exceeding 29 degrees Celsius, 23-year-old Palmer maintained a cool head throughout the match. He also played a crucial role in Chelsea’s third goal, providing a brilliant assist to João Pedro.
Palmer was awarded both the Final’s Man of the Match and the tournament’s Golden Ball for best player. Over the course of six matches in the competition, he recorded three goals and two assists.
The joy of proving himself once again on a big stage was evident in Palmer’s interview with DAZN, where he said, “I love finals. It feels amazing to perform well on such a big occasion once again.” He added, “This victory is special because few people expected us to do it. But we knew what we were capable of. The way we fought on the pitch was extraordinary.”
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca also praised Palmer, though he credited the entire team for the win rather than singling out one individual.
Earlier in May, Palmer had also shone in the Conference League final, assisting twice in Chelsea’s 4-1 victory over Real Betis and earning the Man of the Match award. This time, his brilliant performance in another final seemed to elevate him to a new level.
Meanwhile, the Golden Boot race was fiercely contested, but the honor ultimately went to Real Madrid’s young forward Gonzalo García. The 21-year-old Spanish striker scored the highest number of goals in the tournament with four. Although others matched his goal tally, García surpassed them due to his assists.
Benfica’s Ángel Di María, Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy, and Al Hilal’s Marcos Leonardo each scored four goals as well. However, García’s additional assist gave him the edge for the Golden Boot.
Additional individual awards were given based on personal performance: Chelsea’s Robert Sánchez won the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper, while PSG’s talented youngster Dezire Doué was named the Best Emerging Player.
